The Christkindlmarket in Chicago is a real Chicago holiday tradition since 1996. It is modeled after the fabulous Christmas markets of Germany.
It was evident that the Chisttkindl Market is a special holiday tradition for many Chicago families. I saw many children were dressed up for photos with Santa, and the adults were having a good time eating traditional German food and drinking strong, warm spiced wine out of ceramic boots.
As I meandered around, the atmosphere was festive. Various Christmas songs danced into my ears as I walked about. Street musicians played upbeat renditions of holiday favorites. Smells of sauerkraut and sugared, roasted nuts tickled my nose, wafting in and out of range as I walked amidst the aisles of food and gift vendors.
A variety of traditional German foods tempted me as a meandered amonst the stalls. Baked apples filled with marzipan and nuts, strudel, bratwurst and potato pancakes served with apples and sour cream tempted my tastebuds.
The market is a festive and delightful place to do some holiday shopping, with vendors selling traditional German crafts as well as unique and handmade items from all over the world.Pin It
